Programs —Climate Change Faculty Work
Group
SNRE has formed an interdisciplinary
consortium to broadly address the complex issues emerging from
climate change. Research, teaching, and outreach/Extension
are equally engaged in adaptation
and mitigation responses.
Areas
of common interest:
1. Integration of diverse research areas (e.g., physical,
biogeochemical, economic, social, cultural, biological, ecological,
human demographic, public health etc.) as an interdisciplinary
response to climate change. Because of the far reaching effects
of climate change on virtually all academic disciplines, we
might view one goal of this research group as integration
across diverse disciplines as a new research domain.
2. Focus on mitigation of climate change.
3. Focus on adaptation of human and natural systems to climate change.
4. Florida as one venue for pure and applied research.
5. Generation of integrative research themes with explicit hypotheses.
6. Coordination of preparation of interdisciplinary extramural proposals for
funding.
This group will build on existing programs and seek
new collaborations and initiatives. UF faculty members working
in disciplinces associated with climate change are encouraged
to join this consortum by contacting Stephen Mulkey at smulkey@ufl.edu
SNRE provides limited
financial support for the logistics of organizing
the group.
Both the
Century
Commission for Sustainable Florida and Environmental Defense
have expressed interest in creation of interdisciplinary
research driven programs for climate mitigation and adaptation.
Should proposals emanate from our research group, SNRE
will provide administrative support for pre-ward and post-award
grants administration. We will coordinate our activities
with the research deans of the various units across campus.
Principals in IFAS are presently working to develop a symposium
for Florida, and we will coordinate our activities with
this
effort.
